Fun with Floating and Sinking: Exploring Boats and Buoyancy at Nursery

This week we have had a splashing good time exploring boats and buoyancy!

We started the week with a simple floating and sinking experiment. Using a variety of everyday objects, the children made predictions about which items would float and which would sink. This activity not only introduced them to basic scientific principles but also encouraged critical thinking and observation.

Next the children built their own boats! Using materials such as sponges, leaves, corks, and paper, they crafted boats of different sizes and shapes. We then tested these boats in water to see how well they floated and how much weight they could carry without sinking.

Of course, no water-based activity would be complete without some good old-fashioned splashing around! The children had a fantastic time playing in the water trays.

How You Can Extend the Learning at Home

Continue the Experiments

You can continue the floating and sinking experiments at home with everyday objects. Fill a basin with water and let your child predict and test which items float or sink. Encourage them to explain their reasoning and discuss their observations.

Build More Boats

Challenge your child to build boats using different materials you have at home. You can use items like aluminum foil, plastic containers, or even fruits and vegetables! Test these boats in the bathtub or a large bowl and see which designs work best.
