At Holbeach Primary School, we value music because it is a powerful and expressive art form. Music is proven to boost creativity, and support development in social skills, self-discipline, and confidence. It also helps enhance cognitive development such as working memory as it allows pupils to work through multi-sensory experiences.

We provide a music curriculum that allows our children to develop a solid understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music through the skills of performing, composing and appraising. We ensure children experience a range of classical, rock, folk, jazz and popular music taken from different times and cultures. We encourage music appreciation through our focus musician each term.

At Holbeach, all of our children have the opportunity to participate in choral singing as a key stage as well as having the opportunity to sing in smaller groups in classrooms. We are working to develop a strong progression of skill in our group singing sessions, which focuses on developing rhythm, pitch, harmony and the ability to sing in multi-part rounds according to the age group. In class, children have the opportunity to improvise and compose using vocal and instrumental skills.

All of our pupils learn to play a variety of tuned and untuned musical instruments, especially when we teach percussion (Steel Pans) string (Ukulele) and woodwind (recorder) instruments in Key Stage Two. Pupils are given regular opportunities to perform both in and outside of school both vocally and instrumentally.

Children in Key Stage Two are also offered the opportunity to build on these with additional instrumental lessons in school time (privately or in small groups), including financial support for Pupil Premium children.

Our wider curriculum offer includes opportunities for pupils to take part in extra-curricular musical groups including: choir, steel pans, and Performing Arts club to foster a love of music.
