Do Gases Have Weight? Year 4's Exciting Science Experiment!

This term, year four have been learning all about states of matter. This week we focused on the exciting world of gases. The key question we wanted to answer with our experiment was do gases have weight?

We planned to test our theory using a variety of drinks, balloons and some kitchen scales. The experiment was simple, first we wanted to see if releasing the gas from a drink would inflate the balloon we attached on top. If it did it would show us that gases can take up space, even if we can move through them freely in our day to day lives. The second thing we wanted to test was did the weight of the drink change after we shook the bottles. We tested this by weighing the bottles before and after shaking them. Although the weight only changed by a few grams, it was enough to prove our theory that gas does have weight.

However, one bottles balloon did not inflate and not surprisingly that was the same drink that remained the same weight. This is because it was not a fizzy drink so as much as it was shaken, there was no carbon dioxide to release into the balloon.

We are looking forward to more exciting experiment in the coming weeks as we continue to explore some of the mysteries of science! Stay tuned for more updates from our brilliant year 4 scientists!
