Maths Week in Shell Class
What an exciting Maths Week we’ve had in Reception! The children have been busy exploring 2D shapes and their properties, and we’ve loved seeing their curiosity and confidence grow.
This week, we learned to name and describe shapes such as circles, squares, oblongs and triangles, talking about their sides, corners, and what makes each one special. The children became fantastic “shape detectives,” spotting shapes all around our classroom and outdoor area.
One of our favourite activities was making our shape Aliens. The children carefully selected different shapes to make their aliens and then used wonderful mathematical language to describe their creations. We heard brilliant phrases like “My alien has a triangle face with 3 eyes!” and “I used a square for the body!” Their creativity and use of shape vocabulary was amazing to see.
In phonics, we have learned the new sounds m, d, and g. The children are becoming much more confident at recognising sounds and are now beginning to use writing independently in their play. They have been labeling pictures, writing messages, and even having a go at simple words. It’s lovely to see their enthusiasm grow each day. Keep practising at home!
We are so proud of how engaged and enthusiastic the children have been throughout the week. Perhaps they can go on a shape hunt at home and tell you all about the shapes they can find!
Have a lovely weekend!
